With the recent national recall of salmonella-contaminated eggs, people are getting more and more worry about the quality of the eggs they are buying. On the other hand, I don’t think we can live without eating any eggs, can we?
Before you read the rest of the article, you should know that eggs that are laid from chickens that live freely out side are much better than the those of from caged chickens.
If you notice, when you buy eggs at the grocery store, you can see some labels attached on the egg package. They are “Cage Free”, “Free-Range” or “Free-Roaming”, “Organic”, and “Natural”. Be sure you understand all of these terms.
“Cage Free” means that the chickens were put inside a building like a barn. They can roam freely inside that building. Although it is not as good as when they live outside, at least here they can move their wings and move around.
“Free-Range” or “Free-Roaming” means that the chickens are allowed to spent some time out side the cage. However, we cant tell for sure how long because no third party inspection is required for this type of operation.
“Organic” means that the chickens have to be permitted to go out side and the are also fed using certified organic feed. Third party inspection is needed for this type of claim.
“Natural” means that the eggs are still what they are. The human haven’t done anything to the eggs. But, there is no guaranty that they haven’t done anything to the chickens.
